WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

Melbourne Wine School is proud to offer the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 3 Award in Wines. This course is open to you, if you hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines.

​

The Level 3 qualification is designed to give a thorough understanding of the principal wines of the world and their commercial importance in the world market. 

The qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of wines with regard to their commercial value.

 

Holders of the WSET level 3 Award in Wines will be able to describe the characteristics of the principle wines and spirits of the world and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and value.

This course is suitable for people who are not employed within the drinks industry but wish to learn more about the subject. It is important that potential students appreciate that this course is used by a wide range of professionals as a development course for the drinks industry, and is approached in that way by our tutors.

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines builds on the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines. It is highly recommended that you must have completed WSET Level 2 Award to sit this Level 3 course. If you haven't completed the WSET level 2 please get in touch.

Assessment

A multiple choice paper of fifty questions: pass mark 55%
A short written answer paper of four questions: pass mark 55%
A tasting examination: Correctly identify two wines and produce a written analysis using WSET level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting.

Successful completion of the exam will lead to the internationally recognised WSET Level 3 Award in Wines. You will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

​

Entry Requirements: You must be of legal drinking age (18) to participate in this course. 

 

Cost: $1,550 (inclusive of WSET Level 3 study guide, tasting glasses, and examination fee).

The course assessment is split into two essential units: Unit 1 focuses on your theoretical understanding of the subject and your ability to communicate this, while Unit 2 focuses on your tasting abilities. 

Both units are examined in person on the same day, with a short break between the papers.

Course Overview: The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines will give a thorough understanding of the world of wine, spread over 2 units and covering topics such as:

Unit 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, wine making, maturation and bottling

  • How key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal wines of the world

  • Sparkling wines of the world

  • Fortified wines of the world

  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

 

Unit 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT)
